Ellwood Thompson's Local Market Grows in Carytown

"Locally grown" aren't buzz words at local grocery retailer

Thurs., March 13, 2008 - Richmond, VA - Apparently the western edge of Carytown has fertile soil. A long-time feature that took root there nearly 20 years ago continues to thrive. New things are cropping up, too and it's no surprise the growth is organic. Ellwood Thompson's is adding approximately 2,500 square feet to its existing footprint by expanding into adjacent space in the shopping center on Thompson Street.

"Our community has spoken and we've listened," says Ryan Yougman, Ellwood's chief executive. "Ellwood Thompson's growth enables Richmond's local food movement to have more options and allows our creative staff to continue to push the boundaries of unconventional dietary choices." The store will enlarge its kitchen and bakery to offer a greater variety of prepared foods and freshly baked breads. Space devoted to the nourish (holistic health and beauty) department and local and organic produce department will be increased. Additional seating/dining space will be added also.

While the expansion allows for a larger kitchen and retail sales area, Ellwoods had to get creative when it came to finding more space for the bakery. Under the leadership of Jannequin Bennett, the company's executive chef since November, the store will move its bakery operations to Ellwood's Bakehouse located across Thompson Street, in the space formerly occupied by Metro Bakery. This will be a production facility only; all retail sales will be through the store and café. (Café, you say? Keep reading.)

Bennett has already made changes at Ellwood Thompson's since joining the management team last fall. She has improved many of the Ellwood's classic dishes while also introducing new recipes. "We're striving to help people transition to wellness by providing foods that meet their diet and lifestyle," says Bennett. "Whether some one follows a vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or omnivore diet, Ellwood's provides high-quality and freshly prepared foods for their enjoyment."
