Our Promise

Quality standards = Quality store experience

Ellwood Thompson's staff reads labels -- lots of labels. We don't sell anything at our store that we wouldn't eat ourselves. Our shelves are stocked with foods that are minimally processed and free of artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives and sweeteners. You won't find trans-fats, hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, or GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms). You will discover fresh, healthy, delightful food that's as nutritious as it is delicious.

Our buyers actively seek out and support sources of locally grown organic foods, recognizing their environmental and health benefits. We feature meat and poultry that is free-range, organic, and free of hormones, antibiotics, and chemicals. Products offered at Ellwood's are cruelty-free, proven safe through non-animal testing methods and we have a policy of integrity and full disclosure about the ingredients and sources of our products.

Shop with ease and peace of mind at Ellwood's!

No High Fructose Corn Syrup (No HFCS!)

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a sweeter form of corn syrup. It is a refined sugar and is produced by processing corn starch to yield glucose, and then processing the glucose to produce syrup with a higher percentage of fructose. Media reports and research papers have pointed to HFCS as a link to the growing rate of obesity in the United States. While a direct link has not been proven, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports that fructose converts to fat more than any other sugar. Why take the chance when there are so many other options that are delicious and are not linked to the obesity epidemic? Ellwood's doesn't take that chance so you don't have to either.

ET = Paraben Free

Everyone is welcome at Ellwood Thompson's, except for the paraben "sisters" - Methyl, Propyl, Butyl and Ethyl Paraben; they're a toxic clique. Used as inhibitors of microbial growth and to extend the shelf life of products, parabens cause many allergic reactions and skin rashes. Studies have shown that they are weakly estrogenic and are linked to the formation of some cancers.

Even though they are known to be harmful, parabens are still widely used throughout the conventional skincare, hair care and cosmetic industries, mainly as preservatives. So, you'll be happy to know that Ellwood's entire Health and Beauty department is free of parabens. You won't find any of the ugly paraben sisters on our shelves.

Just say no to GMOs

At Ellwood Thompson's Local Market, we don't go for GMOs. Genetically modified organisms/genetically modified foods are not part of our product mix in any way, shape or form. All tofu products contain natural, non-modified soybeans. Produce is grown naturally without scientific manipulation. Meat and seafood are raised on real sustenance, too; there's no modified, genetically enhanced food to be found. At ET's it's real, honest, food.

No Factory Farming

Ellwood Thompson's does not support cruelty to animals in any form, nor will we support the environmental and health threats factory farming causes. Below on the right is Joel Salatin at his farm in Swoope, VA. On the left is an arial view of a "factory" pig farm where thousands of pigs are crowded into metal frame, concrete slab buildings. The brownish rectangle is a waste lagoon. Read more >>.

ET Doesn't Believe in Irradiation

Here at ET we believe food should be packaged, transported and stored to maintain freshness and nutritional value without the use of irradiation. Our produce department is 100% organic and we strive to make the rest of our store organic too; irradiation is not part of the accepted organic process so you have our promise. There will be no irradiated foods offered at Ellwood Thompson's.

Irradiation can only be used on a select group of foods, its total effectiveness has not been measured nor have the long-term health effects of consuming foods treated with radiation from sources such as Cobalt, Xrays and high energy electron beams. ET believes irradiation of foods is a quick and risky approach to food safety and detracts from the focus of the bigger issue of handling food contamination and safety by meaningful, safe methods.
